Pettits Lincolnshire sausages have been reborn in a collaboration between one of Grimsby’s oldest and most iconic names, John Pettit and Sons Family Butchers, and one of the town’s newest brands, Docks Beers!
Direct descendants of the eponymous John Pettit, Stephen Pettit and his brother Andrew (one of the new custodians at Grimsby Town FC), have joined forces with the King Edward street brewers to bring new life to the famous sausage. From December 1st the sausages will be on sale from the brewer’s taproom and website, with counter sales and click and collect services initially available, and plans to offer a UK wide delivery service in the coming weeks.
Pettits, which closed its doors in 2017, was an award-winning family run butchers that served the town for over 125 years. Based in the heart of Grimsby’s town centre on Bethlehem Street, it was the proud producer of some of the best sausages in the country. It won a number of prestigious industry awards, and the Lincolnshire sausage was enjoyed by customers across the UK and beyond.
Stephen Pettit explains how the collaboration came about, “The Lincolnshire sausage produced by our father, and his father and grandfather before him, was always a favourite product of ours, and was very popular in the town and beyond. Andrew and I, and our sister Emma, who used to work in the business, have frequently been asked when they may be available again, so we set about finding a way to make it happen. Having found a butcher who was up to the job of making sausages to our high standards, we approached Docks Beers to see if they would be our exclusive sales partner.
“We have spent a long time getting the recipe right and we are confident that the new sausage is one that fans will recognize as unmistakably Pettits, with its unique spicy taste. Our recipe is closely based on the original recipe that has not changed since 1810. They are still made the old-fashioned way, using prime free range pork cuts alongside our secret blend of herbs and spices. We have certainly enjoyed the process of ensuring that the sausages are just as we remember, and we hope that the people of Lincolnshire are pleased that they are available once again.
“Dad was naturally extremely saddened that the business ceased trading a few years after his effective retirement, and he is delighted that the most famous product is making a comeback. We are delighted to be working with Will and Shaz and the team at Docks, and we hope that the partnership between old and new will be a long and successful one.”
Will Douglas, Director of Docks Beers, commented, “I’ve always been a fan of Pettits sausages and before moving to Grimsby I would make annual pilgrimages to their Bethlehem Street butchers to stock up. We are proud to be in partnership with Stephen and Andrew and excited to relaunch the famous sausage just in time for Christmas.
“The Pettit name is historic and one that is synonymous with Grimsby. It was as much an icon of the town as the various landmarks that define it. We feel privileged to be involved in bringing them back to life. It’s not a flash in the pan – the sausages are here to stay, with frequent supplies sent to us for sale over the counter in our taproom They will soon be available online on the Docks Beers website with next day UK wide delivery, and you can also reserve your order via the website’s Click and Collect facility.
“We even have a limited supply of the original Pettit’s monochrome carrier bags for the first few hundred orders. These will no doubt be collectors’ items in the future so you’d better be quick if you want to be sure of getting one!”
The sausages go on sale from our taproom on Wednesday 1st December.
